Starting an online business or bringing an existing business online can be exciting, challenging and very satisfying as results come in. Online businesses typically cost less to run than similar brick and mortar businesses, but are subject to different challenges.

What does it take to create your own website?

Designing a website sounds like a major challenge, but depending on your computer knowledge and the tools you use, it is within the skills of most people. You don't always have to learn programming or even HTML.

Of course, you can learn HTML or programming if that suits you, but for many people in business, such time can be best spent on their business.

Most business websites can do quite well starting off from a template. Depending on what you offer you may or may not need heavy duty ecommerce options. Even when you need ecommerce, you may be able to get by with a payment processor who will let you process online transactions. The options available for online sales can be simply amazing.

The overall cost of creating your own website, as measured simply in dollars, will typically be far less than if you were to hire a designer; however the time expended can be far greater. You need to choose a balance between your ability to learn new skills, how much software you want to invest in and what the hosting plan you choose has to offer. Some hosting companies will give you all the tools you need for most websites; others do little more than host your completed website.

Why not just hire a website designer?

Hiring a website designer makes many aspects of starting a website for your business much simpler. You don't have to learn any new skills, you don't have to worry about whether or not someone will find your efforts amateurish. On the other hand, every time you want to make a change you have to pay for it. But if you choose your designer carefully, you can be certain that the results will be professional.

A good designer will rarely be cheap, but hiring someone to do the unfamiliar work for you does free you up to run your business.
