Popups and Popunders
There are more ways than just search engines and PPC to advertise your business online. Banner advertisements are a popular form, although they are more limited in effectiveness, as users have learned to tune them out. More controversial is the popup or popunder window. These are windows that open when you go to a given site.
There are many people who do not like popups/unders, for the simple reason that they take control of their computer in a sense - opening a window they did not choose to open. They can also be intrusive. If you use a popup, make sure you use only one on your site, and have it set with a cookie so that it only opens once per user per day. The best use for the popup is to advertise a special or get subscribers for an ezine.
Popunders are more discreet, as users may not notice them immediately, and they do not interfere with the immediate browsing of the site. You should still limit yourself to only one at a time. If you advertise on a site that places your advertisement on a popup/under window, be certain that you will not be one of several. These are popular with co-registration services for ezines.
