Figuring out how to design your online business

Are banner ads worth it?

Banner Advertising

You will find a lot of people who feel banner advertising is on its way out. Why? Because people have learned to ignore them, and the click through rate has become very low. But, you do still see them everywhere, and of different types.

The classic banner ad is 468x60 pixels in dimension, and is often seen at the top and bottom of pages. There are a number of banner exchanges out there which require you to place a code on your website for banners to be rotated on, and for each time you show a banner, your banner may be shown, or you may get a 2:1 ratio, or possibly a different ratio. This has the advantage of being shown on many different sites, but is often essentially untargeted traffic, unless the exchange offers specific categories that fit your business well.

Banners may be other dimensions, and called buttons or skyscrapers. Use what works best with your site and the sites that you advertise on.
