Figuring out how to design your online business

So your business is going online...

It's time to decide how you want to make your website. Hiring a website designer, copywriter or someone to market your website for you can add up quickly, but you'll probably get the work done reasonably quickly. Doing it yourself can be chancy, even with a template. Most important, no matter which way you go, is to figure out how to avoid the scams and the ineffective or short term tactics you will find out there.

There's so much to learn about running even a simple website it's easy to feel overwhelmed. Fortunately, there are both tools and people for hire out there to help you. You are the one who must decide which is the best for you and your business.

Getting a website designed is the first thing you think of when you bring your business online. It's easy to forget that you still have to get the site written, and it needs to be marketed just as a brick and mortar business needs to be marketed. You have to find ways to communicate with your current and potential customers.

Rather than provide these services, I have decided to give you information to help you to make these difficult decisions. You'll read about tools that can help you get your business online all by yourself. You'll learn about what to look for when you hire someone to create your website, copy or market your website for you.

Online business is very different from offline. You often will never meet your website designer face to face - in fact, they may live in a different state or even a different nation. Customers have different expectatons from an online business than offline. Tactics that work offline may not be as successful online. And, of course, there are new laws to be aware of.

On the other hand, online business has a much lower startup cost on the average, unless you hire the most expensive of designers, writers and so forth. Website hosting is much, much less than rent would be for a comparable offline business. Anything you post on your website, or indeed, anywhere online, can be found for years to come, making a good reputation vital.

I firmly believe in building an online business for the long term. That means no dirty tricks, understanding what people want search engines to do for them, even if they don't do it yet, and keeping up with current trends in online marketing.
